The season returns on January 5, 2012.
In the mid-season finale Stefan,Elena, and Damon made a plan to get Klaus back to Mystic Falls so Mikael(Klaus's dad that is a vampire that is a vampire hunter) could stake him with a special stake(Klaus is a original that is a hybrid). Klaus came back with a lot of hybrids. When Klaus asked Stefan to bring him the body of Mikael, He showed up with a living Mikael. Stefan made a promise with Klaus to give him his freedom. Damon tried to stake Klaus while Mikael distracted him by holding a knife to "Elena." Mikael stabbed Elena. Stefan attacked Damon and Klaus staked Mikael. Then Elena stood up and and Klaus realized it was Katherine, then Katherine ran off. Klaus granted Stefan's freedom and then Stefan stole the coffins that contained the Original family minus Rebekah who was staked by Elena and laying in the Salvatore house.
